Parenting Books

GCDC has a small library of parenting books.  The following list provides a sampling of the books in our collection.
Go Anywhere Games For Babies:  Nearly 70 fun games designed to play on the bus, in the waiting room, at the park, or right at home. Written by the best-selling baby game author Jackie Silberg, it's printed on extra-heavy coated paper for maximum durability, and uses a special binding that lies flat on any surface-even a parent's knee! Sections include games for babies birth to 3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months and 9-12 months, plus a bonus section of going-to-sleep games.

The Worried Child:Recognizing Anxiety in Children and Helping Them Heal:
Anxiety in children diminishes their intellectual, emotional and social development, as well as physical health. Author Paul Foxman believes there are three interacting ingredients that contribute to anxiety in children -- biological sensitivity, personality, and stress overload.  The Worried Child shows that anxiety is preventable – or can at least be minimized – by raising children's self confidence, increasing social and self-control skills, and teaching them how to play, relax, and communicate their feelings and needs. Written for parents and teachers and anyone dealing with children, the guide covers the importance of adequate rest, sleep, and exercise and provides detailed lists, skill exercises, sample dialogues, and case studies. It also presents extensive information on the various types and symptoms of anxiety disorders. Advice for educators, health care professionals, childcare workers and psychotherapists is included along with a chapter and tutorial written specifically for children.

50 Edible Activities for Parents and Children: Snacktivities:
With Snacktivities!, you and your children will prepare fun, creative concoctions in minutes. Make dinosaur eggs, tomato towers, alphabet sandwiches and more. Fifty easy activities turn the food that's already in your refrigerator into works of art!

The Business Traveling Parent: How to Stay Close To Your Kids When You're Far Away:  Does business travel force you to leave your children for days or even weeks at a time? Now, author Dan Verdick gives you a wealth of easy ideas, tips, tricks, and games to stay involved in your children's lives despite spending so much time away from home. With just a few moments a day and The Business Traveling Parent, you can make a world of difference in the life of your child.

Helping Hyperactive Kids--A Sensory Integration Approach:  Sensory integration has provided help to children with behavior, learning, and motor skills problems for over 40 years. A treatment based on play, it helps children absorb, process, and respond to information in an appropriate manner. This book provides a complete overview and explanation of the therapy, as well as practical sensory integration–based techniques that can be used by teachers and parents to help the hyperactive child. This non-medical approach can be used in conjunction with, or as a substitute for, traditional drug treatments.

Children and Babies with Mood Swings: New Insights for Parents and Professionals:
Addressing the challenges of living with a child whose moods are extreme and unpredictable, this book transcends traditional tendencies and diagnoses by discussing mood swings in terms of how they develop, instead of presenting the reader with the usual list of symptoms and treatments. The complex interplay between children's emotional states and the various developmental milestones that lie along the pathway to adulthood are described, offering hope to parents by giving them a whole new way of looking at an old problem that paradoxically seems to be increasing in modern times.
