Goddard View Feature (June 2015). Walk around the NASA Goddard Child Development Center and you’ll see young caretakers of the environment at work. Students turn off the lights when they’re not in use. They routinely place recyclable items into appropriate bins. During the spring, each classroom plants and tends to its own garden. Over the past two years, GCDC has engaged in a continuous effort to integrate environmental education and management practices into its curriculum. In addition to posting numerous signs that promote conservation, the school teaches students how to make art out of reusable products and takes them on walking field trips to learn about environmentally responsible transportation. arn about the scientific process in fun and hands-on way. The 2014 GCDC science fair, “Using the Scientific Method,” featured more than 20 science exhibits crafted by more than 30 students in Shooting Stars through Kindergarten, who put their heads together to create unique projects for the fair. On November 15, the Godard Child Development Center’s kindergartener students, along with the Code 250 Environmental Division, worked together to participate in “I Want to Be Recycled.” The groups joined thousands of local\ organizers holding recycling events across the country to celebrate America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Life At Goddard Feature (June 25, 2013). Every parent is convinced that their child will be the next Pablo Picasso. The parents of the children at the Goddard Child Development Center might just be right. "Appreciation of the arts is a part of our everyday curriculum at GCDC. Our students often try to reflect some of the different styles of artists they have studied when they make their own paintings. They are very talented," says Syretha Storey, GCDC director. A colorful collection of paintings by the GCDC children is on exhibit in the Building 21 cafeteria until around September. Continue Reading

The Maryland State Department of Education has recognized the Goddard Child Development Center for offering early childhood programs that promote healthy living through its Health and Wellness Recognition. Thanks to several of its programs and activities focused on healthy eating and physical activity, the center is able to help build a foundation the children can use to live healthy lives, a criteria used in granting a center this recognition. This is made possible through Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), a cooperative venture among NASA and other international space agencies that coordinates scheduled, radio contacts with students and astronauts aboard the station.
